Key Elements of an ADHD Diagnosis

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), diagnostic criteria for ADHD extend beyond particular symptoms. The standard criteria are the following:

  • A person should have six or more inattentive or hyperactive-impulsive symptoms.
  • There should be a history of having some of those symptoms before the age of 12.
  • Symptoms should manifest themselves in at least two different settings.
  • It should be possible to prove the negative impact of ADHD symptoms on daily functioning.
  • The symptoms cannot be better explained by other mental health conditions.
That is why diagnosing adult ADHD is a comprehensive process. It includes several steps:
A healthcare professional assesses your symptoms and additional diagnostic criteria. They rule out other mental health conditions and physiological causes before making an ADHD diagnosis.
The disorder usually has an early onset. If you experienced any symptoms of ADHD in childhood, tell your healthcare provider about that.

ADHD can run in families, so information about your relatives can help evaluate the risk factors and current symptoms better.

Our medical team is ready to guide you through all these steps.

Receive a Personalized Treatment Plan

There is no cure for ADHD, so the primary treatment goal is to manage the most bothersome symptoms long-term, minimizing their effects on daily functioning.

Different patients show different combinations of ADHD signs, and the severity and impact of symptoms may vary from person to person. That’s why we create personalized plans, including:

Behavioral therapy

MEDvidi provider may refer you to a psychologist, psychotherapist, or counselor who can recommend varied coping techniques that alleviate the effects of ADHD symptoms.

Prescription medication

If necessary, our medical team can provide suitable stimulant or non-stimulant medication prescribed online.

Lifestyle changes

Quality sleep hygiene, a healthy diet, and regular activity are some of the many lifestyle changes that can help deal with ADHD.

Online Medication Management for ADHD
For some people with ADHD, pharmacotherapy is the first-line treatment. For others, it is a last resort. Not every patient needs medication but for some, it might be the only effective option. Each medicine has benefits and drawbacks, and a healthcare provider takes many factors into account before writing a prescription.

Commonly Prescribed Medications

Stimulant Medications
  • Adderall (amphetamine)
  • Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine)
  • Ritalin (methylphenidate)
  • Concerta (methylphenidate)
  • Focalin (dexmethylphenidate)
  • Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate)
Non-Stimulant Medications
  • Strattera (atomoxetine)
  • Catapres (clonidine)
  • Intuniv (guanfacine)
  • Wellbutrin (bupropion)
  • Effexor (venlafaxine)
ADHD medication often serves as the initial support. Symptomatic relief makes it easier to learn self-help strategies and start using them.

People with ADHD can have a dual diagnosis, also experiencing the symptoms of:
Depression

Anxiety Disorder

Excessive worrying, difficulty focusing, restlessness, trouble sleeping, physical symptoms like heart palpitations and sweating.

Insomnia
Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, inability to fall asleep after waking up too early, tiredness and inability to rest during sleep.
Bipolar Disorder
Periods of mania or hypomania (agitation, racing thoughts, reduced need for sleep, impulsivity) and depression (irritability, fatigue, decreased motivation, procrastination).
Comorbid conditions can make it harder to diagnose ADHD. It’s important to see a qualified healthcare provider to get an accurate diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment.

FAQs
Yes, healthcare providers use the same diagnostic criteria during in-person and online visits. At EZCare Clinic, you can schedule a video consultation with a qualified clinician who knows how to diagnose and treat ADHD online.
Our medical team comprises healthcare providers licensed to help patients in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. We constantly work on making mental health care accessible to everyone across the US. Feel free to contact us at (504) 414-5095 or [email protected] for more information.
Sign up to create your Personal Portal and book an appointment. On the chosen date and time, you receive a link to a video call with a licensed medical professional on our telemedicine platform. The initial appointment lasts for 30 minutes. During this time, you discuss your symptoms and available options for ADHD treatment. If there is a need for ongoing support, you can book follow-up appointments that last for 15 minutes. They are needed to monitor your dynamics and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.

Medical providers at EZCare Clinic can prescribe ADHD medication online, including both stimulant medications and non-stimulants. Note that while a treatment plan is created in discussion between a healthcare provider and a patient, a healthcare provider makes the decision about the necessity of pharmacological treatment and a particular medication being or not being prescribed.

Remember to tell your clinician about your medical history and all medications you are taking or were taking recently to avoid drug interactions and assess the risk of addiction.

Currently, EZCare Clinic doesn’t accept insurance. We work on collaborating with several insurance providers and we will notify our patients once this option becomes available. Thank you for your understanding. Feel free to contact us at (504) 414-5095 or [email protected] for more information.

Yes, you can use HSA or FSA to pay for your appointment and medication if prescribed.
We send prescriptions as soon as possible but in some cases, this process may take up to 72 hours. If you need your prescription urgently or it has been more than 72 hours, please call us at (504) 414-5095 or write to [email protected], and we will contact your healthcare provider and expedite the process. Remember that you can check your prescription status at your Personal Portal to know when it’s time to pick up your medication. You can also call your pharmacy to learn more.
Different factors and their combination can cause ADHD. The most common ones include genetics, brain development and functioning, nutrition, and environmental features, such as social context. You can define what may cause it in your case during a consultation with a mental health professional.
ADD (attention deficit disorder) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) are the same condition but the term ADD is outdated. The disorder was called ADD before hyperactivity was fully included in the diagnostic guidelines. Whether you have the symptoms of hyperactivity or only those of the inattentive manifestation, the diagnosis is ADHD.

Medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have both benefits and side effects. Common adverse reactions include decreased appetite and weight loss, sleep issues, tiredness, drowsiness, and nausea. Prolonged use of these medications may cause high blood pressure and the risk of abuse and addiction.

Note that the above list is not exhaustive. Each medication used to treat ADHD has its own list of side effects, precautions, and contraindications. Discuss all these aspects with your healthcare provider when creating a treatment plan.
